A non-profit organisation in San Franciso called Scrap are saving materials destined for landfill and donating them to schools for arts and crafts projects.  Founded in 1976, the company's director said that they are currently managing to divert over 250 tonnes of materials.

Will a Deposit Return Scheme Increase Recycling Rates?

Despite the ongoing rumblings about the deposit return scheme, a parliamentary committee has heard that it may not increase recycling rates, it has revealed there is no real evidence that it would have a dramatic effect in the UK and one of the alternative ideas is to encourage plastic manufacturers of packaging to contribute financially towards recycling projects.

UK Set to Meet 2017 Packaging Recycling Target

Statistics have shown that the UK is on track to meet it's target for packaging recycling this year, aluminium and steel have already met 2/3 of its target and other recycling streams are not far behind.  Although there is a worry about China's intention to crack down on the importing of some materials which could affect the recycling industry.

Recycling Trolleys Replace Blue Bins in Ayrshire

Residents in Ayrshire are going to be having their recycling binds replaced by a trolley which consists of stacked black boxes that are specifically designed to collect paper, card, plastic, cans and mixed glass.  The introduction of these trolleys is set to bring in a new weekly recycling collection in aid to stop things from entering landfill.

This weeks recycling roundup features a story originating from Bristol where Bristol Waste has been refusing to collect recycling boxes if they are 'contaminated', they have hit back saying their policy states they are not obliged to collect recycing boxes if they contain broken glass, nappies, needles or pet waste, sometimes this leaves residents not having their recycling collected for weeks.

The Pop Up Restaurant that Refuses to Let Food go to Waste

Will Saying Goodbye to Oxford's Bins Boost Recycling Rates?

A recycling panel in Oxford have put forward some solutions to increase the recycling rate in the county, they have come to the conclusion that if bins are removed from the city centre people will be more aware of the problem of littering.  Some ideas they have come up with includes having recycling bins in the shape of drinks cans and offering a waste service to students when their tenancy has come to an end.
