Short on Space? Invest in a Smart Space-Saving Recycling Bin

If you’re an avid recycler already, or you want to just recycle more in general, wouldn’t it be great to have a proper space for recycling, where you could sort the different materials all ready for your collection?

But the reality is, many of us just don’t have the space. You’ll know what we mean if you have a small kitchen or you live in a flat or apartment, and you have to resort to hanging up plastic bags around the kitchen to collect your recyclables as you go. It might work for you, but bags full of recyclables get in your way, and they do kind of spoil the look of your kitchen.

If you don’t have the space for recycling, it can be tempting to just put everything in your household waste bin where it will end up in landfill. But don’t get disheartened, there are ways that you can recycle more, even when you don’t have a lot of space.

Check the label

Many people are stumped by recycling labels, but the most common ones you see will help you tell whether something can be recycled or not. Different councils have different rules though so if in doubt, check their website. Generally speaking though, if you see:

‘Widely recycled’ on the label, it means go ahead and recycle it, and at least 75% of local authorities recycle this item.

‘Check locally’ means that you should check that your council recycles this item. Between 20 and 75% of local authorities recycle this item.

‘Not recycled’ means that less than 20% of councils accept this item for recycling. If in doubt, check.

Check what recycling options are nearby

If your council does not accept certain items for recycling, don’t worry because it’s not your only option. Does your local supermarket have a collection point for plastic bags and bread bags? Is there a recycling bank nearby for plastic bottles or textiles? You can still save items from landfill, stop them from cluttering up your kitchen, and recycle them conveniently.

Flatten your waste to recycle more

If you have a recycling bin in your kitchen but it soon fills up, remember to condense your waste as much as you can to create more space. Flatten any cardboard, squash cans and plastic bottles, and put papers in a flat pile.
