Coca Cola Introduces Plans for a More Sustainable Packaging Strategy

Coca Cola has plans to unveil a new strategy to reduce packaging waste in Western Europe, they set out a sustainability action plan with a number of targets to included the recycled plastic contentof its PET bottles to 50% by 2025 and work towards making 100% of their packaging recyclable or resusable, this is called the 'This is Forward' campaign.

Northern Ireland is now at a record low of sending waste to landfill, as well as an increase of 3.6% to 50% for recycling rates, these are the first set of figures published since new regulations on separate food waste which came into force in April.  Despite a very simple change it has made a significant increase in recycling for the region.

Can Fireworks Be Recycled

Firework night has been and gone now but are they recyclable?  They generally cannot be recycled and should ideally be soaked in water after use to ensure the flammable materials are removed, sparklers also do not have the ability to be recycled due to the metal being coated in many different fuels and oxidisers.

A non-profit organisation in San Franciso called Scrap are saving materials destined for landfill and donating them to schools for arts and crafts projects.  Founded in 1976, the company's director said that they are currently managing to divert over 250 tonnes of materials.

Will a Deposit Return Scheme Increase Recycling Rates?

Despite the ongoing rumblings about the deposit return scheme, a parliamentary committee has heard that it may not increase recycling rates, it has revealed there is no real evidence that it would have a dramatic effect in the UK and one of the alternative ideas is to encourage plastic manufacturers of packaging to contribute financially towards recycling projects.

UK Set to Meet 2017 Packaging Recycling Target

Statistics have shown that the UK is on track to meet it's target for packaging recycling this year, aluminium and steel have already met 2/3 of its target and other recycling streams are not far behind.  Although there is a worry about China's intention to crack down on the importing of some materials which could affect the recycling industry.
