There have been calls for firms who use plastic and other hard to recycle materials in their products to be taxed to help reduce the amount that goes to landfill. Taxing firms would force companies to pass on costs to consumers which could discourage people from buying their products, which may in turn make them look at more environmentally friendly packaging.
The government has indicated that it plans to introduce a plastic tax on non-recyclable plastic such as straws and single use cutlery, with the eventual aim of encouraging businesses to switch to more environmentally friendly alternatives. The treasury carried out a consultation and got 162,000 consultations saying most would back a tax on single use items.
