All Things Light And Recyclable

Rudgwick Youth Centre in West Sussex has become one of the first drop-off points for a range of plastic waste that can't currently be recycled by the council. This has been made possible thanks to recycling company TerraCycle, and the aim is to make as many types of packaging reusable as possible, thereby helping people to work toward a future zero waste economy.

Youth worker Loyd Harp, who set up the project there, said: “The Rudgwick Youth Centre is delighted to have signed up as a TerraCycle drop off location for the Ella’s Kitchen Brigade, Johnson’s Baby Wipes Packaging Brigade, Coffee Packaging Brigade, McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade, Activia Yoghurt Brigade and the Tassimo Brigade.

“These recycling programmes make it possible for the people of Rudgwick to recycle waste packaging which is normally too difficult or costly for local councils to recycle.

“As such, Rudgwick is among the first communities in the UK to offer recycling drop off points for these materials which would otherwise end up in landfill.”

Recycle Waste Packaging

We think this is an amazing development and one that will hopefully spread across the country quickly. Though we all try to recycle as much as possible, that in itself is the limit -- it's not possible to recycle certain materials, or at least not through local councils. If more communities, companies councils can follow Rudgwick Youth Centre's example, countless wrappers, baby wipes and yoghurt pots would not only be saved from landfill, but be transformed into far more useful objects. Examples are park benches, watering cans and even waste bins, so the rubbish could even be turned into something to keep Britain tidy!

Also, a lovely additional element to this story is that as well as supporting the environment, people will be helping the club. For every item collected, the centre will receive 2p. All funds raised will be used to help fund the free youth activities that the centre runs.

So if you live in the area, make sure to take Rudgwick Youth Centre as many otherwise non-recyclable materials as you can. Not only will you be saving the planet, you might even help the club get a few new footballs
