Cigarette Recycling Bins Have Arrived in Horsham

Innovative recycling bins for cigarettes have been installed in Horsham town centre as part of the TerraCycle cigarette recycling scheme.

The aim of the scheme is to make one of the UK’s most problematic sources of waste easy to recycle when people are on the go.

All cigarette waste is accepted in the new bins, including all parts of extinguished cigarettes, cigarettes filters, cigar stubs, outer plastic packaging, inner foil packaging, rolling paper and ash. Paper and cardboard boxes are not accepted, but they can easily be recycled in public or domestic recycling bins.

The waste will be sent for processing, where they will be shredded to weed out any tobacco and paper which will be composed. Any filter materials will be washed and turned into rigid plastic, ground to a powder and sent away to be used to make commercial products like signage and table tops. No waste will end up in landfill.

Register to take part at www.terracycle.co.uk and create a profile.

Empty ashtrays into a plastic bag once they’re full (making sure cigarettes are completely extinguished, of course.) Make sure the bag is properly sealed, then put it in a box, and download a free shipping label.

Collect cigarette waste from receptacles in your designated smoking areas (making sure that waste is extinguished).

Print out the poster provided to let people know you’re taking part in the scheme.

Put all cigarette waste in a plastic bag and make sure it’s sealed. Put the bag in a box and download the free shipping label.

Attach the shipping label to the box and arrange a collection via UPS using the details given above.
