Recycling Firm Teams Up with Barclays to Introduce Recycling to a London Festival

It’s festival season, and sure enough, the topic of recycling has reared its head like it does every year. The revellers that attend the average festival usually get a bad rap for leaving waste behind, and festival organisers have to do everything they can to keep it under control.

Swindon-based recycling company Recycling Technologies joined forces with Barclays bank to install 25 recycling bins at the Barclaycard presents British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park as part of a trial to see if it would reduce the amount of recyclable waste that’s being discarded or put in general waste bins.

The recycling bins were available from 8th until the 11th July to encourage festival-goers to recycle items like crisp packets and food wrappers. The plastic that’s collected will be taken to Recycling Technologies’ plant in Swindon where it will be turned into an oil, known as Plaxx. The oil will be then used to make new plastic.

The festival was a good start, but Recycling Technologies says that the technology used to turn the plastics into oil can easily be scaled so that local authorities can collect all plastics and know that they’re being turned into something useful.

A spokesperson for Recycling Technologies said that the technology keeps plastic in the system rather than it ending up in landfill or the environment. She added that with the support of Barclays, they are able to recycle valuable plastic again and again.

How can you help?

If you’re going to a festival or other outdoor event this summer, here are some ways to be more eco-conscious and minimise your impact on the environment.

Choose a recyclable tent

Are you guilty of buying a cheap tent and then chucking it away after the event is over? Most discarded tents end up in landfill, so be sure to take yours home. Better still, invest in a good quality tent that will last, or opt for a compostable model.

Invest in a reusable water bottle

Given that over one million bottles of water are consumed at Glastonbury alone, you might want to rethink how you’re going to be downing your H2O.

Buy a reusable water bottle and fill it up from the taps that you’ll find on most festival sites. This is kinder to the environment and kinder on your pocket.

Try and share a lift

If you’re driving to a festival, try and share lifts if you can. There’ll be a better atmosphere en route and fewer cars on the road mean fewer carbon emissions, it’s a win-win.

Recycle

You’ll find that most festivals have introduced recycling schemes now so there’s no excuse to ditch your aluminium cans or cardboard packaging!
